Sunday, June 13

Thursday Dick took me to Castle Rock for some retail 'outlet' shopping. Castle Rock is south of Denver about 40 minutes. It was a dreary/gloomy day so glad we went to Vail yesterday when it was beautiful weather. Lunch at Applebees and then unfortunately only about 30 minutes into shopping, my vertigo kicked in and I called Dick to come find me and told him it was time to leave. I haven't had an episode of this for a long time so caught me off guard. He stopped and got a gallon of water and I sat with a wet towel over my face all the way back to the Elks in Westminster. Definitely not as bad as some episodes I'd had in years past but still not pleasant. Once back at the rig I took a Dramamine and laid down for awhile as we had dinner plans with Wayne & Chris Markus, some friends from Dick's days at Goulds.

We had a lovely dinner at Saltgrass with Wayne and Chris and I was feeling some better. Dick and Wayne had great fun reminiscing about being a salesman for Goulds while Chris and I listened and rolled our eyes at some of their stories. They love their home and life in the Denver area, however are envious of us 'nomads' as Wayne called us.

Friday morning I assured Dick I was feeling well enough to drive so we pulled out of the Elks Club about 8:30 a.m. and headed east on I-76 & some state and US highways towards Sidney, NE our destination. Sidney is Cabela's, Worlds Largest Outfitter, corporate headquarters and is quite a complex, complete with a campground. It was an easy 167 mile drive and we were parked and laundry started by noon. Cabela's is another of those 'expensive' campgrounds where you spend too much in the store and since I had to cut my shopping short the day before, I had to make up for lost time. After a little retail therapy, I continued with laundry and ironing (yes I still do just a little ironing) and Dick checked oil, washed windows, etc. on the rig. We grabbed a burger and salad at the restaurant on the Cabella's grounds and then enjoyed a quiet evening. Weather was in the 70's and breezy but as the sun went down we knew it would be a 'chilly' night, and it was with the breeze blowing all night.

Saturday morning we were up and gone by 8 a.m. making our way east on I-80 towards Kearney, NE where we dry camped in another Cabela's parking lot for the night (no campground here). We checked out the store but actually came out of there with no purchases. One of the clerks suggested a local favorite called 'The Cellar' for lunch. We took her suggestion and it was very good. They're known for their onion rings so we ordered a half order & glad we did as they were not what we expected and too 'doughy' for us, however, our salads and sandwiches were more than adequate. After that lunch it will be cheese and crackers for dinner tonight. Today's mileage was 227 miles and another windy day in NE. I fueled up near Kearney & unleaded was more than diesel at $3.99 a gallon. Dick will need diesel tomorrow morning so will let you know that price in the next blog. So far NE is definitely higher than CO for both unleaded and diesel.

I hope to update this blog on Sundays and Wednesdays so thanks for following along.

  1. You write very well, sounds like you are just down the road from us except it's 107 today and the air quality isn't what it used to be, of course neither am I.

Safe travels, hope the vertigo is gone for good.
